How You Can Help

Add to our iNaturalist page if you find a bird-window collision on campus!

As a form of citizen science, our interns focused on outreach have created an iNaturalist project for observations of bird-window collisions that we can use anecdotally in our research. All you have to do is download the app, make an account, and follow the instructions on the iNaturalist page to upload a few photos of the bird and type in some details.

What to do if you find an injured bird:

The Wildlife Trusts and Avian Vets recommend wearing gloves and putting the bird in a safe, cool, shaded place like inside a box with tissue paper or a towel lining it so they can rest and recover. Do not bring injured birds to the Norris Center, bring them to a local wildlife rehabilitation center like Native Animal Rescue in Santa Cruz.

If you find a dead bird as the result of a bird-window collision, please report it to iNaturalist (instructions above). If you find a dead bird that was not a window kill, you can bring it to the Norris Center as a specimen, but please handle them with care, wear gloves, and pick it up with an inside-out plastic bag.
